Search intent: Photocraft review

Review notes, not a lab score.

PhotoCraft aims at Photoshop muscle memory with an open-source Rust stack. As of 2026-10-15 it is labeled early alpha on ArtCraft’s site—strong idea, unfinished product. Below: who it is for, and who should wait.

Why people search for it

  1. 01

    FOSS + offline

No subscription for the core editor; runs locally; source public.

  2. 02

    PSD-first workflow

Layered PSD/PSB is a first-class goal on the product page.

  3. 03

    Agent-ready commands

CLI/MCP story is unusual among consumer editors—if it stays maintained.

Why you might wait

Early alpha means incomplete features, possible data-loss bugs, and missing Photoshop parity. Production studios should keep a known-stable tool (Photoshop, Affinity, Photopea) as primary until ArtCraft exits alpha. We do not publish invented benchmarks.

PhotoCraft vs Photopea (short)

Photopea: mature in-browser editor, broad formats, convenient, not the same open-source offline Rust stack. PhotoCraft: open source, native desktop builds, early alpha. For “open PSD on Chromebook today with max compatibility,” Photopea often wins; for “FOSS native editor I can audit,” PhotoCraft is the experiment to watch.
